Constant fighting with myself. I mostly read nonfiction, so when I do read fiction I think of it as a treat in comparison. The two are exceptionally different. But, as im sure youre aware, reading is not an activity conducive to the media which dominate our lives contemporarily. Its a skill that can only improve with hands on dedication. I imagine all that practice likely took place in the youth of generations before us, but we all grew up with information technology
I am this way finally read The wolf King by Lauren something. I loved it. Then my partner wanted me to read fourth wing. There was double the text on the page and double the pages. I read two chapters then felt overwhelmed trying force myself to read. So I aim for book less than 300 pages. It seems to keep me better.
I’ve learned not to force chemistry with books. I give them about 60 to 80 pages, depending on the book. If I’m still not invested, I let it go. Not because it’s poorly written, but because reading is as much about timing as it is about taste. Some books are great, they’re just waiting for a different version of me.
I’ve learned to view reading as more of a self care activity. I think that mindset change helped me want to read more but when I started I just set a goal for myself to read for 15-20 minutes a day. Also idk if you’re an outdoor person but romanticizing it by reading outdoors with a preferred beverage is just amazing.
if i’m being honest, whenever i get that urge to aimlessly browse my phone ill try really hard to be like: “hey, i could just read instead” and do that, it might not be a lot at first but if you end up liking the book you’ll just find yourself reading much like i used to find myself doomscrolling lol
