I personally disliked how she was portrayed and felt it was inaccurate for hyper mobility, especially since I myself had to take breaks from my sport because mounted activities are near impossible sometimes. “pushing past her limit” is dangerous thinking
People complain about Vi always thinking how “weak and fragile” she is, I’m sure it’s repeated intentionally bc ppl with a disability have to always think of how a situation/environment affects them. She doesn’t get the luxury of not thinking about it..

she doesn’t really have the luxury to take breaks though, like she would die. i agree that “pushing past her limit” is not sustainable tho nor good advice for people with disabilities. although maybe the author meant her mental limit of what she thought she could handle? idk

The author took a real world element and inserted it into a fantasy world, its not going to be portrayed the exact same.. and the author has the same disability as Violet so that gives her ground to write about. The post is not about the disability itself, it’s about people complaining about something being repetitive, but it was written like that on purpose.. I understand what you’re saying but that’s unrelated to the og post

Well, let me raise you this. She was FORCED to be in the most dangerous option available to her. It was either train or die. Failing isn’t an option. Repeats go to those who make it but don’t bond. Given the situation, she has no choice but to push her limits daily

It’s not unsustainable—it’s impossible. You can’t just mentally overcome a physical disability. And I prefer listening to people with disabilities on this subject…

I understand that, however, Violet thinking about how she has to push past her limits is an aspect that is literally impossible for people with disabilities. That would cripple you, even if there is magic in that world, she would genuinely not survive as a result. I wish the author had decided to be more creative, she says Violet is crafty and smart but only writes one scene and throws that out the window.

I think RY was attempting to use the audience’s ignorance to be lazy with her writing. It’s dangerous and unfortunately abilist to use that type of thinking, even if it is fictional. Portraying that a disabled character can simply “push past” a disability, magic or not, is really harmful. It feeds into the idea that people who are disabled can simply ignore it and are just being dramatic. I wish she was more creative instead of pulling that card. It honestly was disappointing.

I understand what you are saying as well, but I’m not in the business of going back and forth with someone about an opinion on if the writing/book was good or bad. I just don’t understand why you used my post to make the comment as if what I said was wrong.. At the end of the day it’s still based on a real disability and people need to be mindful of the comments they make about it when talking about Vi cause it can be offensive to people that really has it. That was the intention behind my post

i literally have what she has but okay lol. i didn’t mean “mentally overcome a physical disability” i meant what i said which was “pushing past her mental limit of what she thought she could handle” which in MY experience was more than i thought i could handle in weight training which i do

That’s literally not how it works. Your body will fail you, and it’s less than unwise to attempt to push that. It’s a HARD limit, one that when you attempt to cross it, will cripple you. RY did a poor job of showing her “intelligence” and supposed tendency to win in unorthodox ways. Instead her condition just a convenient excuse to make her tiny and thin and just so small. Which to anyone who knows about hyper mobility and/or eds, is just not right. This is a misinformed and ableist take.
