Omg I bought this book and I’ve been putting it off for over a year, what are your thoughts? Should I read?

Honestly? Not worth it. It takes DFW 1,000 words to say anything, and the only commentary worth its salt is the stuff on addiction and recovery. It’s full of incest, slurs, and derogatory stereotypes and multiple scenes made me sick to my stomach with the unnecessary depth DFW described sexual assault in.

When I read the title I was going to say, this is 100% Infinite Jest isn’t it? I’ve been gifted the book no less than 5 times (3 physical, 1 physical audio cd, 1 digital audio version) and good gravy I cannot get through it.

Long books with long stories are great. Infinite Jest sounds like someone trying to hit an assignment minimum word count. Yeah some things with great descriptions are wonderful, but you don’t need 15 words every time you want to establish that there’s a table in the room. Save the super vivid descriptions for things that deserve it.

The multiple pages describing the tilt of a mattress made me want to put my head through a wall

I mean on audible the book is only a few hours short of the Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection, which is all 60 stories plus curation and notes from Stephen Fry. I’ve got nothing against long books, but Infinite Jest feels easily 4x longer than it needs to be.
