Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat, From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall are the four that first came to mind. The only one that was somewhat redeemable was Boyfriend Material because it was funny, but ultimately they all sucked
Ok! I have a solution. One common thread between all of these is that they are romance-based books. Are there romance books that you have liked? Maybe you just aren’t into romance as a genre. The other option is fantasy, as 3 out of the four of these are fantasy(esque). If you tend to like non-fantasy romance, then maybe the fantasy genre isn’t for you. Or the combo of fantasy + romance isn’t your cup of tea
There are definitely some romances I’ve liked, because I tend to love romance novels. I also love fantasy. Fantasy and romance, usually together, are my favorite genres. So that’s why I was extra disappointed to dislike these. As for why I disliked them, Boyfriend Material’s man character was unbearably horrible, FBAA’s writing was bland, and for the last two I hated quite literally every part of them. They’re two out of the three books on my “worst books I’ve ever read” category
Well my only thought is that like, from what I’ve heard, at least for throne of glass (havent heard of the others), is that they’re very overrated. Like generally romantasy is thought of as being pretty mass market appeal but people super into reading tend not to like it as much as it’s generally pretty shallow. Only other theory lmao. I dont read romance really so I cannot weigh that much in on this fully. Love fantasy though lol
