It’s quite literally no different than judging someone for liking trashy movies or garbage tv. If we can make fun of people for watching the 2019 Cats film or riverdale, it’s just as harmless to hate on a preferred book. Not everything is as serious as you’re making it out to be

They’re not hating on a book, they’re hating on a genre. Whether it’s serious or not, I do think it shows a very interest shift societally. The issue isn’t that they’re trashy, it’s that they’re trashy and explicit and for women. I see it as a mix of a rise in judgement surrounding sex, but also not wanting the readers of these novels to make all female readers look bad (ie sexual or deviant or trashy). But like, idk, I don’t think it’s bad to enjoy life, yanno?

I see what you mean. I’d argue traditional porn (like, the shit on the internet) has very minimal societal benefits. I can’t really apply the reasons for why to smutty/porn books though. So I guess I agree with you
