question: has anyone read the Rose Hill Series by Elsie Silver? I’m familiar with her name, but I’ve never read her books, so I don’t know what her writing style is. Is this a series I could recommend to my 12 and 15 year old cousins? *i forgot to add the 15 year old to my original post😅*

Daughter of pirate king! Maybe a little bit older than 12, but it’s a great duology

I think my favorites in seventh grade were On the Fence by Kassie West, Guitar Notes by Mary Amato, Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, The Running Dream also by Wendelin Van Draanen, The Lies About Truth by Courtney Stevens, and The Sister Pact by Stacie Ramey (this one is a lot darker than the others I mentioned. I read it around age 12 and it is marketed as YA but take a look at the description before adding it to your cousin’s list)

thank you! i think she’s liking romance lately. i’ve been researching romance authors who write no smut to recommend to her. she wants to read Harry Potter, so i’m looking for stuff similar that she can read in addition to HP!

I have read other Elsie Silver and I think they tend to run a little mature for that age range? If they want romance, check out Lynn Painter’s YA!

Once Upon a Broken Heart too! If they’re nerdy Dating and Dragons series is fun. I also loved the Spiderwick Chronicles around that age, maybe a smidge younger but they’re great and spooky (not romance).

I’ve actually never read those myself! So, I think I might suggest those as something to read together with them!

Fablehaven has a romance plot with the older sister that is totally PG, hard agree on PJO from the other guy, also has very PG romance. Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children is another great one that does have some (weird) romance throughout, I read them when I was ten and was fine, there’s some sexual references and stuff but nothing a middle schooler wouldn’t understand, and nothing explicit.

Also may I recommend Wildwood by Colin Meloy for a “book club” book - I read it around that age and it expanded my vocabulary greatly while also being a super fun read

Also also - The Search for Wondla and relevant trilogy by Tony Diterlizzi is a long fun and poignant sci-fi series And both this and Wildwood either have or are going to have animated adaptations to watch as well
