I’m thinking of writing a fantasy book but with Appalachia and farm esque vibes but still very magical. Would you read this?

Maybe? Depends on the plot. I do love Appalachia though

Even if I wouldn’t, someone would. Write whatever you wanna!

So long as it doesn’t stereotype Appalachia, absolutely

Absolutely! I’m writing an Appalachian story too based on the folklore so it’s nice to see how you portray it!

It depends. Are you from Appalachia and/or is your perspective on Appalachia based on culture, folklore, and a knowledge of the oppression of human right throughout American history? Or is your perspective ignorant and based on classism and surface level knowledge.

Not at all, it would be inspired by the beauty, folklore, and traditions but still be its own book

Okay, cool. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t gonna be someone that’s not from here and doesn’t know us writing yet another book that others and stereotypes us lol

That’s my biggest thing lol. Not to gatekeep Appalachia, but I think it is very important to be from or at least have spent a lot of time in the region if you want to do something like this, especially since there are so many readily available stereotypes

I grew up in the smokies and I just want it be inspired by the beauty, folklore and traditions while also being its own story and world

Then yes! I was just agreeing with their idea of having grown up or spent time in it!

Exactly. I mean, at this point, I think it is kind of important TO gatekeep Appalachia. Our entire history has been one of orchestrated stigmatization and othering in order to exploit our labor and the land we relied on. Now more than ever it’s so important to fight against that and take the narrative into our own hands, tell our own stories. I applaud what you’re doing OP

As an Appalachian I do take this too seriously lol. I think if you write about Appalachia you should learn the history of the continued struggle of the people here. And how that may affect the characters and readers perception of the events in the story
