Thistlefoot was really good magical realism with some horror and social issues elements! If you want horror recs, I would love to know what you’ve like because I read sooo much of very different vibes. Anxious People was also a really good like, human story with some social issue undertones.
The Three Body Problem trilogy kinda transitions from sci-fi psychological thriller to space opera (still with a lot of danger just a little more fantastical), I enjoyed it. It’s a little long overall but the first book is shorter and somewhat self-contained. Also can’t help myself since you mentioned social problems, probably not what you meant but The Power Broker and The Death and Life of Great American Cities are both excellent modern (1970ish) classics on urbanism.
