I just DNFed Gerald’s Game by Stephen King. There was a pretty graphic SA scene with a minor. I can’t believe he actually wrote that.

i remember having to DNF his short story Apt Pupil for a similar reason. some of his books are decent but a lot of them just make me side eye the way he talks about women

yea never fucked with him. idk why people read his stuff. Like.. theres sa against a minor in that, the outsider.. probs more books if i cared to look. its disgusting and im over the argument that it happens in real life. sure, yea, but theres a way to write about that stuff and he isnt doing it well. Also, when its reoccuring like that its not for real life representation or for the story, its for his own weird pedophilic ass enjoyment.

I literally finished that book a few years ago and it was so hard to finish. It’s good writing just terrible to read

Yeah I’ve read a good handful of his books and I’m not a fan. I don’t know why I keep reading them.

Calling names because someone is uncomfortable with pedophilic undertones? Yikes

It’s literature. Have you ever read Lolita by Nabakov? It’s a classic novel that hits hard and has beautiful lines in it and a pretty clear message by the end. And the protagonist is essentially a pedophile. If what you want to write offends other people because they are missing your point and focus on the flaws and sickness of a character, I say write on and fuck everyone else and fuck the audience. Art has no boundaries

Lolita is written by a CSA survivor. If you got any message other than predators are evil and twist reality for their own benefit, then you missed the point. This really isn’t the book to be stacking against Stephen king and his weird obsession with (very) underaged sex. And yes writers are free to do whatever they want and push boundaries, but the second you release that into the world, you are agreeing to criticism. And that’s what this is. It doesn’t make someone weak for calling it out.

“It’s literature” and some literature is written by pedophiles, hope this helps! Read Death in Venice and get back to me.

Death In Venice is excellent. You should read The Magic Mountain if you haven’t already.

Death in Venice is about a pedophile by a pedophile! It is not excellent just because it is a classic, and it’s a huge red flag liking the book. I read the book in a writing class taught by a professor who loved it and also groomed his students! You are weird for liking it and for defending pedophilia in books.

😄 you miss the point of these great books! If you don’t like these books, don’t read them and stop commenting on stuff you hate! Your criticisms are unsubstantial outside of “author is a pedo, book is about a pedo”, go read stuff you’ll like dude and evaporate out all of your vitriol

You’re the one here calling names. Maybe practice what you preach about vitriol. I read whatever tf I want to and I’m allowed to hate what I read. Death in Venice is a slog and an obvious, annoying self insert outside of being about a pedophile. The author wrote it based off of his own infatuation with a 9yo boy btw but go off about how it’s so great. Just because it’s a classics does not mean in any way that it is good. Grow up and learn that your opinion isn’t fact.

and lolita was written without explicit scenes in the way that was done respectfully to the sad real life occurrence of such events. anything remotely sexual was written in a way that was implied through poetry and metaphors. im glad to see that someone else here has a brain and does research on these things

Exactlyyyy like it’s completely different than for example the orgy scene in It. Ridiculous to compare them. Like read what you want but also there is an objectively better way to handle some things than others, and calling the ppl who are uncomfortable by something that shouldn’t be comfy for anyone names is wild.
