I get the sentiment for sure, but tbh if every book had sprayed edges, I would not mind at all. They’re just pretty and I enjoy that. And it’s nice that some are coming out at normal book price instead of upcharged special edition so that everyday folks, not just rich collectors, can have them too.
I liked when they were collectibles. I personally like having the spines/titles showing on my shelf so I know what they are, so most regular books I’d barely ever see the edge anyway. If I went out the way and spent more money on a copy with sprayed edges, it was because I loved the book and already owned a copy that it could be displayed next to with the pages out. Now they all feel less special
What do we mean by “regular book,” like, paperbound?? Bc I guess i understand what u mean if a paperback has them vs a hard bound cover, just seems a little odd, but to any average person Les Miserables is probably just some regular old book and not very interesting so you could say that about any title rlly
For sure I see that side of it too. I’m not rich, just irresponsible when it comes to books lol. I am finding more tho that I want less of them because of the quality going down. Since they all have them now, I feel like companies do it just to keep up and theyre either just a patchy solid color, a simple stencil/quote or Ai. They used to be more artistic (obv theres still some exceptions, just what I’ve been seeing)
It’s a hard cover, but just like the trad published one, not “deluxe” or “limited” or anything like that. It does explain the price tho, which I don’t like. I borrowed from the library instead of buying a copy because I’m not paying 30 dollars for a book that has less than 500 pages. I feel like they just did the edges to make it more expensive and I’m worried that’ll be the direction publishers start taking. I’m liking it so far, but I’ll wait for the paperback to add it to my shelf
