im a hairstylist and the anti intellictualism of hairstylists kills me. most people i went to school with failed all of their written tests. i just heard a hairstylist say we need to wash the toxins off our scalp. bby there are no toxins, that’s oil

they would complain that they failed because we were never taught what was on the test but i always got mostly a+ and some as and bs because i actually read the book. they were literally learning the material through random quizlets and wondering why they were failing 💀 even when i see hairstylists recommend things that are great, they can’t explain why they’re important or why they work. it’s so embarrassing to be lumped in with them tbh.

you don’t shampoo bc your hair is “like a plant that needs water” and to rid your scalp of “toxins”, you shampoo because the oil on your scalp grows yeast which causes inflammation and hair loss and the DHT that is found in sebum causes follicle miniaturization and hairloss. and conditioner doesn’t force water into your hair it literally just coats and lubricates the hair!!

like yes it’s always good to recommend shampoo and conditioner, but if you don’t know why and you can’t explain that, you and your clients are going to be missing out on a lot of ways they can be optimizing their routine and saving time and money. understanding the why is just as important as understanding the what, when, and how. if you have any questions you can comment here or dm me bc i give free advice. bc the internet is confusing and everyone says something different

I respect your strength in complaining here instead of constantly correcting them. That sounds like a circle of hell made personally for you

thank you. i’ve learned they don’t want to learn. i’m open to learning from everyone bc everyone knows at least one thing that i don’t. i learned very quickly that most hairstylists don’t care to be correct and they actually look down on you for trying to help them bc it insults them. i could never be insulted at someone giving me information i didn’t previously have. i couldn’t even get them to read the book to pass the tests lol. being an autistic stylist is very hard
