A men’s beard trimmer/electric razor is your best bet, especially if you’re new to if. Can’t cut yourself or get ingrowns with that. As for how often, that’s up to personal preference.

I usually use a normal Gillette men’s razor and it works really well if you do it in the shower under warm water and you go against the grain first and then with it
