yeah I’ve had severe depression for three years now and cannot remember a lot of what I used to about my life to a debilitating degree. I’ll have depressive episodes and can barely recall what happened during them if at all. it feels like I have brain damage (god I hope not) but it’s just depression…

yes! someone constantly in a state of distress, like what happens with severe depression and anxiety, means the brain is constantly in fight-or-flight mode, which means creating memories gets put on hold so the brain can focus on what it perceives as immediate danger
