If you guys suspected that you had autism before your diagnosis, were you correct? I suspect I have ASD but I don’t want to invalidate others or mislabel myself if I don’t have it. But I know I suffer from symptoms of autism no matter my test-

Also because most self-diagnosed individuals don’t try to glamourise it and have studied up on it fairly well. I was recently diagnosed after a few years of suspicion, research, and affirmation from other Autistic folks.

-I’ve heard of self diagnosing to be mostly positive in the autistic community because prices and wait times can be high for a doctor

Yes I did. I got diagnosed at a young age because of our suspicions and researching

This is nice to hear. Do you think that if I’ve studied up on it and sat with it for a while that I’m possibly ok to self diagnose? I’m not gonna parade it around but most likely tell my close family. I just don’t want paper diagnosis’ to come b*tch at me for glamorizing myself and wanting that attention (absolutely not my goal)

I don’t think that’s an issue at all! There are many barriers and reasons someone may not be able to or may not want to seek an official diagnosis. The only time it’s an issue, in my perspective, is when it’s flaunted as some quirky and cute trait, but I get a strong feeling that’s not you at all. :)

Please don’t self diagnose…and idk where you heard it was accepted or positive in the community to do so but most people (who live off the internet) encourage proper and professional diagnosis. Now, you can say “I think I have autism” or “I suspect I do” but please don’t say “I have” or “I do”. Good luck on your journey though and I hope you get whatever diagnosis it is soon <3 it can take awhile but I promise it’s worth it!! (Also this is not meant to sound rude at all)

Many also understand how difficult even the simplest of Autism diagnoses can be to achieve. Most Autistic people, myself included, understand that and are fine with self-diagnosis provided they aren’t trying to speak for HSN individuals or claiming it haphazardly without actual evidence and struggle. Online or in-person.

I’ve just seen so many “self diagnosed” people do what you’re claiming they don’t do. Especially when they don’t even have autism

I never claimed people don’t do that. They’re far and few between. What you see on TikTok isn’t always reality.

That was my point tho…is that people on TikTok claim all these things about self diagnosis and autism when in real life most people disagree with all that

The people on TikTok say you should and it’s valid and make up symptoms and stuff^ when they don’t have it

Even that is probably just one user or you’re adding to the made-up bit of it. It doesn’t really happen enough, if at all, to warrant gatekeeping of something many of us have had firsthand struggles with getting. Self-diagnosis isn’t just a trend, many people do absolutely hold valid experiences and inaccessibility to diagnoses and still deserve community and support.

I’m not saying that it’s invalid or anything. I think you’re missing my point entirely as you keep repeating the points I’m making and not realizing that

Spreading misinformation isn’t good, that goes for the fakers absolutely. And you’re contributing to that, too, because most of the community absolutely is supportive of SD. On and offline.

I disagree based on what I’ve seen online and offline. Most people I have encountered say that it’s not good to self diagnose. You’re just treating your opinion like a fact. These are all opinions at the end of the day

Then you need to actually engage in the community and not your own little circle. I’m tired of the misinformation and gatekeeping from the handful of you who pull the ladder up behind you. It’s not cool.
