My professor yelled at me and grabbed my arm after I emailed her about struggling in class. I’m working on getting disability accommodations and was just trying to explain how overwhelmed I’ve been. Now I’m scared to go back—should I report her?

I know it might seem nerve wracking or confusing but you need to report her or she will do this to a lot more people too

Yes 100% report her, thinking it’s ok to physically lay hands on a student in retribution is not acceptable and cannot be allowed to go undocumented, you and other students deserve better

Yeah I’m gonna need an update after you report her. Her touching you is literally battery.

Thank you it does. I don’t want to ruin her career, but I want the department to understand that the way it’s being handled. I want them to investigate but not necessarily punish. I want to see active change and collaboration with students.

If you’re struggling to report her because of your personal relationship with her, then don’t think about that. Picture another disabled student asking for help being grabbed the way you were. If she’s doing it to you, she’s likely done/doing/will do it to others.

I had to report one of my teachers because she quite literally told me “I think you may need to look into a different profession and I’d change your degree soon because someone like you with all the accommodations you would need with your disabilities (autism and adhd) will never be able to cope I think you should start looking for a new career” she said that in front of the whole class and humiliated me I was crying and I left and immediately reported her. She lost her job.

I know this logically but it’s hard to grapple with. I was once very much close to this professor and now that I’ve tried to ascertain my position— my academic and mental struggles— she’s enacting retribution. I’m just scared

Wait was the yell “Hey” and they just old af so its word against word. No one is losing a tenure saying they grab a students arm and yelled to get your attention. Berate you ? Whole different story go direct confrontation tell her how she invaded your personal space and demand she extra accomodating. Get a LOR out of it

No she berated me over an email I sent outlining my struggles with her course due to her lack of structure, control over her classroom, and pacing within the course. She told me I had no right to send an email like that. And she said I should have told her about my mental disabilities— but I had. The problem is I don’t have official diagnoses, but I’m trying to get them. I know that something is “wrong” with me, but she’s one of those holistic cures people.

And not only that, but the berating occurred in a dark, empty classroom. So I felt extremely unsafe. And when I fled the classroom, unable to speak, tears streaming down my face, she grabbed my arm and tried to take me to disability services herself. Then I finally recovered my voice and was able to tell her “don’t touch me” “leave me alone.” It was at that point when people around were staring and she whispered “oh my god” under her breath.

That does help. I’m trying to file an anonymous report but I don’t even wanna go back to her class today. I feel guilty for being so frightened but I am.

I haven’t gotten to report her yet because I’m trying to compile evidence and witness testimonies. The problem is that I don’t know a lot of the witnesses because they were people in the hallways. So now it’s just me versus her.

Thank you. It was. I’m really bad at conflict and have such a strong flight or flight response that I develop extreme selective mutism and physically cannot speak even if I want to.

She went from being a college professor to being a middle school teacher ☺️

That’s awful. I’m scared to report because she’s the best Arabic teacher at the campus— doesn’t mean she’s good, but she’s the best of the three. And plus, she talks about how she’s discriminated against because she’s a Moroccan woman. Which I can 100% understand, but the ego that she has about how good she is about her job is an inhibition to treating everyone fairly and accepting critiques of how to make her class more inclusive and more productive.

Is there security cam footage? If she left bruises or redness where she grabbed you, you can document that and I’m pretty sure that would give police probable cause to at least request security footage

I asked about camera and there were no cameras in the hallway. She didn’t grab me hard enough to hurt me, but she surprised me and crossed boundaries.

Yeah just cuz she’s Moroccan doesn’t mean she can’t be prejudiced against other races. She can still be ableist. She could still be prejudiced along many different axes of identity despite also being part of a minority group. Her being Moroccan doesn’t absolve her of accountability and doesn’t prevent her from behaving in prejudiced ways.

Plus you also have a paper trail of her being discriminatory against you. I feel like you’re good taking what you have to police or administration.

And you can ask people in your class who saw part of the altercation to act as witnesses. They may not be able to speak to the battery that occurred, but they CAN speak to how she discriminated against you in class.

That’s understandable and I can see where you are conflicted. What ever you choose is your choice. I will say however if you do pursue some course of action, my university told me that in order what to do in a situation like that is to talk to the professor first to see if you can express why you were upset in the situation and talk to see if you can do anything to settle the dispute your self basically and if you don’t like the response or reaction from her then report to the department head

Anonymous replying to -> #10 1d

You will basically tell them what all happened and they are supposed to meet and talk with the professor directly to resolve the issue and when you go to the department head you can tell them whether or not you wish for the head to report the offense to her uppers. This will be the documentation that could affect her career. You have the option to resolve civilly or resolve by affecting her career. You can talk to the department head at anytime and you can wish to not pursue any documentation

BUT you can still civilly resolve the issue between you all I hope this helps

I feel like if I discuss it with her further, she’s going to further enact retribution. She spoke to me about my accommodations in front of the whole class today after I took 30 minutes on a quiz (which is unusual for me but I wasn’t ashamed to take the time I needed). In addition to that, when she spoke about the accommodations, she spoke almost as if I should be ashamed and embarrassed. And then she also has disregarded her syllabus and so the little structure there was is now obsolete.
