i feel like in the past when i’ve been honest to people they always get kinda weird about it and try to defend whoever they’re dating. it’s like i’m seeing it very logically but obviously for them there’s emotions attached

Tbh a lot of the time they do get mad. I try to just remain fairly neutral and say I support them

Sometimes though, if you are too critical in their opinion, then they may push you away. If you want to help this person, sometimes it’s more helpful to just be there for them and be a long-term support system.
