Um. No. They never have been ironic and they never will be. They’re used to convey someone’s intent and context beyond the capability of digital, faceless writing and even neurotypical people can use that. Anyone who treats it as a joke is just a moron. ✌️🤷♀️

They’re used ironically by ableist fuckheads who think they’re being edgy. Hope that helps /gen

it's used as a joke in some contexts but it's a little strange to do that imo

using them outside their meaning is literally the opposite of their purpose. they’re designed to help communicate emotion and incorrectly using a tone tag doesn’t make it a joke, it makes it a lie

They are used both memetically as irony and seriously, although often misapplied. Personally they make things a lot more confusing bc i dont know if theyre joking or what word the letter correlates with cuz diff ppl think diff things ab it

Are you for real? Then how are we supposed to know which ones are ironic and which ones are genuine?? That was the whole point of them in the first place

I feel like if they’re used ironically and seriously then that just erodes their entire purpose in the first place

Yes this is why i find them quite challenging. I think there are better, albeit more verbose ways of communicating tone. Also i think emojis/emoticons do a better job with tone tags, i feel like i have enough literacy in those that i can tell theyre ironic more often

No literally. You’re supposed to “sense the tone” and it’s like… do you know why these were made…?
