If you have autism, what did getting on medication do for you? Tell me in all the ways: personal, emotions, school, work, regulation, etc, literally everything in how it’s affected you. Trying to see if it’s worth it bc I HATEEEEEE taking pills everyday

This is probably a stupid thing to say, but I thought there were no medications for autism? I got diagnosed recently with audhd, so I take adhd meds. I will say taking my adhd meds probably made my autistic traits more prominent though. They don’t blend ofc, so medicating one side, made the other have more influence

So some medications for adhd can be used for autism: ie.there is a high overlap with ASD and inattentive ADHD (used to be called ADD) Some docs try it because it can legitimately help, for others it can wire them or cause anxiety I’m on Vyvanse… everyone is different with how drugs affect them, but Vyvanse helped me be sure in myself and succeed academically. Less distractions and less sensory overload helps me. Meds are not for everyone. But mine legitimately saved my life and be independent

there is no medication for autism. ssris (anti-depressants) can be helpful because many autistic folks struggle with depression, anxiety medication can also be helpful, but it is not possible to medicate autism, only other conditions that may follow

yea i needed medication for how it felt living with autism while surrounded by ppl who acted like i was a freak for being myself just wanting friends and the side effects of all of it compounding over years. lexapro/wellbutrin/adderall for a while. i’m pretty sure a specific form of therapy like occupational is helpful for those with autism.

Exactly this! Having autism was never the “issue,” it’s how we were treated by society as a result of being autistic, over a long period of time. I’ve tried to explain this to others and you just worded it perfectly

I will add, like #3 said, I am on antidepressants and anxiety meds. Most likely emphasized by my autism/the way I was treated due to being autistic. I wonder if I would’ve ever developed depression if I wasn’t in a society that constantly misunderstood autistics, and provided us with the right accommodations
