Tonight someone complimented my top and I said “thank you!” And then there was like a brief awkward silence after as if like I was expected to say something else and idk what I am missing this has happened before with compliments too what am I forgetting

two ideas: 1. they were fishing for compliments and wanted you to return theirs (immature) 2. they were waiting for you to share where you got the top (likely)

My best guesses are either I am supposed to have a compliment to say back or I am maybe supposed to tell them where it’s from?? But I thought in that case they’d ask me that so idk but I thought a thank you was good enough pls any input for what is like socially acceptable and what they could be expecting me to say back bc I am so awkward I always mess up the simplest interactions 😭🔫

Thank you is a sufficient response if you don’t want to continue the convo but most people use compliments as an opener so she was probably expecting a thank you plus an additional response to keep the conversation going. Common responses are where you got it/ if it was on sale, to return a compliment, or sometimes turning it into a full convo can get you a friend like “Thank you I haven’t been shopping in a while, what stores do you go to?” And then try to get a shopping hangout on the books

My mom taught me social cues pretty explicitly growing up, so I know this one! You’re supposed to compliment them back and/or say where you got the top

I'm often too slow to say anything back tbh 😭 most of the time I just say thank you
