Does anyone know the psychological reason why I still keep a friend around that adds nothing positive to my life whatsoever and how I can emotionally cut ties?

Would you rather have 100 pennies or 4 quarters? You can’t change the people around you, but you can change the people around you. You just have to realize what your time is worth and where you’re heart is dedicated. It’s okay to not be friends even if you still care

There could be a number of reasons you keep a friend around. Companionship, fear of rejection, social retaliation, or maybe you subconsciously like a little chaos. The easiest way for me to let go of something that wasn’t good was to just stop caring. You can always make new friends, but you can’t buy back time.

It is better to let things off amicably and with a natural ending (distance, communication, etc) than it is to let a relationship sour until people develop ambivalence and resentment

Thing is, if things go sour, I’ve got an easy out for not having a friendship. And actually it’s been better since we graduated about half a decade ago already.

I have lost friendships amicably and with communication and I have lost them by turning to anger and resentment. I can assure you that, years after leaving a friendship, the understanding that this was a mutual decision made off of respect and understanding has made me feel more confident in myself and who I am as a friend. I loved and respected my friends too much to let them go by the wayside
