because in the gym I usually wear sports bras and spandex and I guess it's a lot easier to feel objectified in those clothes when someone you don't know approaches you based off looks alone

imo I think it's totally acceptable, and I feel like most girls would be flattered, but every girl is different so keep that in mind and honestly don't let one rejection discourage you from approaching other girls if that's what you want to do
