personally i wouldn’t do what 1 said, i would have him in private and just casually be like "hypothetically if my mom were to ask what we were..what should i tell her?"

could phrase it similar to: "hey I was telling my friends about what we did this weekend and they were asking who you were, what should i refer to you as" I've done this before and it opened a conversation to what they are comfortable with in public vs private and what the future would look like if we kept going or if we wanted to make it more serious

and it worked better in person then I think it would over text, it seems to flimsy and casual rather then in person you can gage the reaction and how they felt about you asking
