I see a lot of women on my college Yik yak and in general complaining about how terrible men are and how they manipulate and r-word and say it like it’s a majority. My q is where do you find these people? No one I interact with even once is like that

i don’t believe it is the majority of men that are rapists/ horrible ppl. but nearly every single woman i know has been a victim of sexual assault/ abuse or harassment. there are abusers and rapists among us, and we don’t always know it. i hope it is the case that no one you’re close to is like that, but it could be that they are and you just wouldn’t know

The fact is, every woman I know has a story about being raped or harassed in someway. But most men can’t say they know a lot of men who do these things. That does not mean our accounts are incorrect. You don’t know if they’re like that as a man because they act differently around men than they do women. There are moments that even men I feel safe and comfortable around say things that are questionable. And it’s because they are raised that way.

My rapist I never even knew him never talked to. He found me. I was walking on campus in broad daylight.

The majority of men are not rapists. But the majority of men are willing to be complicit in rape culture, so it’s hard to trust any men. I have seen the sweetest most nonthreatening men I know turn a blind eye to their friend’s predatory behavior either out of obliviousness or a desire to avoid conflict. It’s not enough for a man to just not be a rapist, he has to also be actively willing to recognize and confront harm to women when it’s happening, or he IS a part of the problem.

TLDR; you don’t notice it unless it’s targeting you.

and men are actively conditioned to ignore and excuse predatory behavior in other men, so there’s an extent to which the not noticing is deliberate

Oh yes absolutely. Some of it is genuine lack of knowledge and some of it is absolutely willful.
