I think the broader answer is the internet culture itself. Too easy for people to join fringe groups where fringe groups justify toxic and bad behavior. So they walk around thinking it’s fine and justified. The same fringe groups becomes their consultants in schemes forcing people into their fantasies or interests. The key is how to avoid those subscribed to the fringe groups and to do that is to watch when they get weird which outs them.
