I can answer that as a man. It's mainly because attractive women are having to compete with the average-above average women ""dating"" up. This leads many of the most attractive men to the choice between one attractive partner who they have to put work and investment into or countless effort and investment free situationships/hookups, with increasingly many choosing the latter.
