Anyone else tired of the “what about”ism from men when women try to talk about women’s issues?

I was talking about an assault experience I had and the conversation went like this. “Yeah it was horrible thing. I would never want anyone to go through that.” “But what about the men that get raped?” “Of course those are bad too. I was just talking about my personal experience.” “I find it interesting that you’re ignoring men’s issues for your own.” My best guy friend got raped too. I care about him and other men as well but this guy had asked if I had been assaulted so I was explaining that

Exactly as a guy it bothers me too, like every time I feel like telling those guys yes male victims happen but currently she’s talking about her experience don’t invalidate her or what happened

They simply don’t care about male victims, they just like throwing them around when women talk about their issues. It’s annoying af because we DO in fact care about male victims.

Absolutely. My friend got trapped in a different country with a guy he thought was his friend and stayed at this guy’s house. The guy got really drunk and kept making advances toward him. My friend couldn’t stop him as he kept threatening to tear up his passport if he said no and had grabbed a pair of scissors to do it. No one should have to go through that no matter the gender

The craziest part to me is that they want to talk about male victims to silence female victims, but still never address nearly all of the perpetrators are also male…..

No I haven’t thought about the men when specifically thinking about women’s issues. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about men’s issues, I advocate for male victims the same way I advocate for women’s issues. All I want is to be able to talk about women’s issues for more than two seconds without some male in the comments wanting it to be about him. Like you’re currently doing

FYI, a lot of those studies classify being “made to penetrate” in a separate category from r*pe. For instance the 2010 CDC national sexual violence study reports that 93.3% of male victims of r*pe reported exclusively male perpetrators, but if you include being “made to penetrate”, the result flips to 61.4% reporting exclusively female perpetrators.

Including “made to penetrate” in the definition of r*pe also raises the lifetime probability for men from roughly 1 in 71 to 1 in 16.

Sure, however the underlying issues remain the patriarchy, along with most perpetrators of violent crime being male. Along side with most of the victims of sexual violence being women.

Aren’t most victims of violent crime also male?

It’s almost like I specified sexual violence. Yes men commit more violent crimes against each other, but the victims of SEXUAL VIOLENCE are mostly women.

Right, I’m not disputing that, I just wanted to give context for the first claim.

……ok? And I agreed with you?

I’m genuinely not trying to silence female victims here, I just wanted to correct the claim that “nearly all of the perpetrators [of r*pe against men] are also male” because that significantly misrepresents the frequency of female perpetrators.

I agreed with your original point, you immediately pivoting to say “aren’t most victims of violent crime male?” When that’s not the point I made I don’t agree with. You continuing to engage for no reason because I did in fact agree with your original point is annoying and weird. I dont speak for everyone who reads/interacts with your comments, so stop crying about downvotes to me.

Hold on a second, you pivoted towards the claim that “the underlying issues remain the patriarchy” even though nothing I said indicated that I was disputing that. You also prefaced it with a “however”

Oh brother I used a filler word. The underlying issue is the patriarchy, use whatever word in front of it you want. I don’t GAF

You’re the one who chose to continue engaging past my initial correction, even though nothing about my correction warranted a response.

Anonymous replying to -> OP 15h

Well, the word matters, does it not? I deliberately chose FYI to signify a helpful correction, rather than a rebuttal. However, the word “however” is more commonly used to preface a rebuttal than a correction.

This is yikyak, not a research paper. I used a random filler word quickly in my responce because this is yikyak. I didn’t mean it that way, just replace it with a different filler word.

Okay, thanks for clarifying! Now that I know for sure that you aren’t trying to dispute or argue against any of my corrections, I’ll stop engaging.
