I mean in this case why not? The kid can just call himself “Jesse” for the rest of his life.

Why’s it so important names follow gender norms?

I mean ideally it wouldn’t matter and we could tell gender norms to fuck themselves, but realistically I don’t want my kid getting bullied so I probs wouldn’t do it

You know what, if it meant these white parents would stop putting apostrophes and random vowels and “gh”s in their babies name, or they’d stop naming them adjectives and pet names, I think I could handle a guy being named Jessica

A lot of parents want either a girl or boy & don’t get one so they just give the kid the name they planned.

I wouldn’t care but they would probably end up being bullied

No, it’s not. It hasn’t been unisex since the 1930s lol

No I mean I wouldn’t care if someone did it but I would probably avoid it cause I wouldn’t want them bullied

Because if you name a boy “Jessica” then you’re dooming him to a childhood of being bullied. Think of it like giving a name to a kid that is heavily associated with a different race. You *could* give a white kid a stereotypical “black name” like Tyrone or Shaquanda, but you know that people are going to react to that. Not necessarily in a racist way, but that kid would constantly be asked why they were given that name.

I’m not saying that all black kids need to be named stuff like “Tyrone” or that all white kids need to be named stuff like “Fred”, nor do I think that there’s anything wrong with those names. There’s plenty of names that aren’t particularly associated with any race/religion/sex/etc (I’ve known people of several races that are named “John”, for example). Just be mindful of what you’re consigning the kid to.

I’m mainly thinking of it in a hypothetical sense. Imo, names shouldn’t HAVE to be gendered, I was thinking of it more along those lines as opposed to also being in the context of society currently
