As a white female with a bachelors in psych, I definitely get your point. I honestly feel like half the girls who are choosing this field just want it to flaunt that they’re a psych major. It pisses me off when anyone in this major just claims about being so mentally ill and you can just tell it’s fake and so performative. I am so hesitant to tell people I study psychology because of these stereotypes but I’m doing it not only so I can help children, but for the research and brain side.
I’d expect them to understand racism and ableism but many of them don’t. And some of them will claim to be neurodivergent themselves, but then still be a toxic person in Greek life, like this one girl. The other one who harassed and assaulted me in my dorm was an alcoholic too. This went on for a week. Apparently I didn’t look like I lived there, even though I showed her that my ID unlocked the door. And she thought I had stolen somebody else’s ID because my hair was longer in the pic.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. I want you to know that we are absolutely taught these things in class. How racism- medical racism comes into play, how to be a safe place for all people of different experiences, how we need to take our current bias’ and change them because there isn’t any room for that in therapy. Some of my classmates are asshole- truly awful people. I’ve also had some very negative experiences with psych majors. And I wish I could say we aren’t all like that, but words wont
I worked at a psych ward this summer and one of my coworkers was in the exact psych ward in a pretty intense program when she was younger so I get it trust. They do say to be in the field you gotta have something going on with you first and I feel like to a point yes but you don’t gotta flaunt yk
