Enh grey area. You may have a misconception that date means love when its just getting to know someone for the first couple months

Yeah that’s what I’m a bit worried about. Thing is, I don’t know this guy very well at all and don’t know if there’s romantic interest yet, so I don’t want to lead him on by going out with him because that typically implies a mutual attraction. But I also don’t want him to think I’m shutting him down. I just want to get to know him better first so I can see if I like him/we’re compatible before going on a date so I don’t give him hope that may end up being false.

There’s a word for that, it’s called a first date. You go somewhere, try to get to know each other a bit, and if they seem compatible, then you go on a second date. If not, then you say sorry I’m just not feeling it and don’t.
