My parents are upset that I’ve been with the same person for 3.5 years since junior year of high school and argue that everyone should have at least 5 partners before settling and I told them that’s not a thing in this day and age... am I wrong?

Your parents are thinking of an era long past, there’s no set rule about the number of people who you HAVE to be with before settling down.

I think it’s more important that you get adequate relationship experience, not the amount of people necessarily. Going through a couple relationships gives you a clear idea of traits and qualities you want to look for and avoid. I believe it’s necessary to have a couple failed relationships at least before you find the real soulmate, obviously there’s some exceptions though.

It really defers from person to person. All that matters is that you are with someone who makes you happy

I feel like it’s quite the opposite, getting married to your high school sweetheart is more of a thing of the past

I thought so but that’s when I’ve basically been told to essentially sleep around just to make sure my partner is the one I want since I’ve only had 1 past relationship prior so i was just like “wtf are you talking about”

I don’t think they’re saying to sleep around. I think they’re saying you have don’t have enough experience to know if this is a great relationship or if there are better ones. They’re saying it’s an uninformed choice, and they’re worried that it’s happening out of inertia or fear. They’re might be wrong, but I think that me their fear.
