They recently pulled out one of the oldest ankylosaur fossils, only to find that evolution worked backwards to what we thought. We originally thought that they were going from simple tanks to flashy, but no! They originally started out with very flashy armor that was attached to their skeleton and over time that flashy armor toned down to much more practical armor.
