And it’s not like I support these elements because I DIDNT WRITE THE SERIES but a piece of media I like has some questionable elements and idk why it’s so hard to recognize that I like something while disliking certain elements of it

people are ok when someone reads a classic that has slurs or bigoted stereotypes in it, but somehow they think you HAVE to support every decision a mangaka made…

never your fault when a show you love ends up including some questionable shit you didn’t sign up for, especially if it’s at a point in the series where you were already in it for the long haul being vocally fond of a work of fiction doesn’t mean you automatically approve of every choice the creators made (which is something I gotta work on keeping in mind too tbh) 🫡

I mean mei mei is clearly condemned in the media so its a lil different, bc the Tanizaki siblings are a lil sexualized

Yeah thats cause the questionable part of them is like so in the background it’s basically irrelevant ToT also its theorized they’re not actually siblings due to the author/book they’re based off of. And based off whats currently happening in the manga… i dont think theyre siblings

EXACTLY like we even read this stuff for literature and writing classes and recognize that there are bad elements to it idk why this isn’t applicable to other types of media

Thank you like the whole point of bsd is making characters based off of classical literature characters/books.

What’s crazy to me is that no one really jumps on NGE’s controversial issues but every other anime is open season

for instance, what I’ve seen of BSD’s approach re: the Osamu Dazai character absolutely sickens me as someone who’s been a devoted fan of the actual author for a long time now. especially the recurring cheap punchlines about hanging or wrist-slitting, when this was a real man who suffered from trauma-fueled suicidality all throughout his adult life and ultimately died by his own hand. but I know better than to use that as an excuse to condemn every fan of the series

Yes I definitely agree. I originally didn’t know Dazai was also a real person and when I figured that out it kind of shocked me a lot. I did end up reading a couple of Dazais actual novels out of curiosity and they dealt with a lot of darker themes that BSD makes light of. The series doesn’t really capture the essence of the works it is based off of well although I do like the concept of using authors/their stories to make characters and their abilities.

Exactly and like even the most mainstream stuff like JJK has some questionable characters and moments (cough cough Mei Mei) but the series is still popular and widely enjoyed
