If a dub has one or two characters that sound weird/stiff, that’s bad voice acting. If most/all of the characters sound like that, that’s not the VAs fault, that’s bad directing.

OR it’s a purposeful stylistic choice. Serial Experiments Lain is like that. Very stiff and uncanny, but in a purposeful way.

I think budget can also be a problem. Some anime dubs are so low budget that all the roles are filled by amateurs and new-comers. But, I mean, I don’t hate it. New VAs need the experience 🤷‍♀️

Tbh, anime dialogue is often the weakest part of it, and this is masked by the japanese voice acting masking how cringe it can be because you don’t know the language so it sounds cool. Most recent dubs are equal or better than the original. Just sound cringe because you know the language.
