I can’t speak for the writers but chances are it’s not even something that’s come to mind. Most hearing people associate signing solely with being d/Deaf at first. As #1 said, though, it requires more to understand and use it for it to be effective. Most hearing family members of deaf/non-speaking kids don’t even bother to learn, so it’s not surprising it wouldn’t show up as often in media.
