As a foreigner living in Japan I’m lowkey not surprised. The anti-immigration movement here is really picking up steam since some concerted efforts by the ruling party to blame serious economic problems (mostly from government inaction) on the small foreign population here, and the news environment is relatively insulated. There’s a lot of foreigners here who are already leaving because of increased hostility and new visa changes.

Japan has a much different approach to illegal immigration than the West. It’s strongly tied to culture and customs and the fear of that erasure I think the argument is a bit exaggerated, especially if you can manage the flow of migrants into the country, but the US and Japan are like Earth and Mars—very very different culturally

As someone who lives in Japan the approach here is similar in that it’s deeply rooted in racism and their far right has been taking cues from American Trumpists. People give Japan way too much leeway on the rampant xenophobia and racism here by excusing it as “culture” and allowing neo-orientalism and lack of information and direct contact to cloud their view of it.

Maybe I’m not understanding, but how that any different from the west? Isn’t one of the unspoken reasons why conservatives in the US don’t want immigrants is because they want the population majority to stay white and they don’t want the “erasure” of white people? I feel like it’s the same kind of xenophobia but just in different flavors

That’s why I don’t buy their arguments. They’re too weak, lack substantive evidence, and generally makes no sense But this is what the right-wing of politics have become globally. It’s in direct response to policies on the left that go just as far in their own direction. Japan is humble, from all accounts I’ve heard, but there is certainly a problem with racism and xenophobia that should be addressed. No one is trying to override anyone else’s culture. My understanding is prob limited tho

We know. It’s just the argument Japan tries to make to be largely anti-immigrant. This would be a popular post over there
