The majority of people (including myself) think the rebuilds are better. The ending is significantly more satisfying. The characters overall have better relationships with each other

Also I always felt like the rebuild movies focused more on plot (especially the 3rd and 4th movies). The og anime is more about the mental state of the characters. So I guess I preferred the movies because of that

no, the majority of people who like the Evangelion franchise in any capacity are fans of the tv series first and foremost. obvs you’re allowed to prefer the Rebuilds, personal taste is subjective, but it’s patently goofy to talk like they’re objectively better works from a creative / artistic standpoint

no argument here when you’re talking about how the various versions center different elements and which one is your Preference. but the TV series was undeniably groundbreaking—historically so, as in, it literally altered the entire trajectory of anime as a medium—in a way that the Rebuilds simply are not… the latter aren’t “better” overall, just different

That’s fair I guess. I think the big issue with the anime is that it’s difficult to follow. You’re left with more questions than answers. I enjoyed the rebuild movies cuz they were a lot of more straightforward. I liked knowing what happened to all the characters. The og is too open ended for me personally. Maybe I’m just too simple hahaha

Also just reading your comments I feel like you’re probably a bigger Evangelion fan than me. Admittedly it’s been like 3 years since I’ve seen the series. I honestly might go back and watch the anime now lol

I don’t agree that it’s difficult to follow, I got plenty of enjoyment out of the narrative when I was 13. but yeah, the approach / mode of storytelling is very different for sure—the TV series being a bit challenging, abstract, open to interpretation etc is a huge part of what made it so successful & influential. nothing wrong with preferring something more straightforward and action-focused ofc! being less complex & thought-provoking just isn’t exactly a hallmark of superior quality

I won’t deny that I’m somewhat of a pompous nerd for this particular franchise lmao, the tv series + End of Eva left a huuuuge impression on me as a kid and I’ve revisited them several times since then. read a bunch of the spinoff manga, pirated the untranslated N64 game, collected Rei figures, got into arguments on the EvaGeeks forum…

no worries if it’s still not to your taste of course, but I would def encourage you to give it another shot if you’re considering it. one of the nice things about that “open-ended” nature is that you can take something different away from it (in terms of meaning) every time, based on who you are in the moment, what draws your attention etc 👍
