I find a lot of popular anime writing mid af: Mash, Re zero, to your eternity season 2, My Hero, Welcome to Demon School I also hate how so many of them are set in highschool. Why aren’t there more adult protagonists in the adult world 🫩

A lot of anime/manga are set in high school because in Japan that’s pretty much the only age range where you will be truly free and able to have these sorts of adventures. Corporate world in Japan is soul-sucking lol. I agree though that more popular shows tend to have meh writing most of the time!

Even the writing and characterization of Demon Slayer is at a 4/10 to me. The animation makes it an 8/10 though.

Because u don’t actually engage in the medium as intended for a lot of them, and for the ones u complain about being set in hs it’s usually because it’s written for high schoolers

How about u stop watching the stuff for teen boys and watch adult stuff. The teen stuff is shonen which is meant for teen boys so they gonna be high school.

Demon slayer is agreed by many, it’s not terrible writing at all but the animation does carry it to where it is. Take the fate series for example: made by same studio with spectacular animation and sounds but the stories are confusing with very little leeway on new anime watches for the story across its series

What even is “misery porn”? And where are u in my hero? Cause the first couple season aren’t the best I agree but once u get to stain arc it’s quite literally just a better story than last until the current final season which I’m waiting to binge

If you’re looking for adult protagonists, I can think of two off the top of my head: Aggretsuko (slice of life / comedy) and Zom100 (zombie apocalypse? I haven’t watched it but I’m p sure the main protag is an adult in that one)

Oh oh oh I have two more actually! The protags aren’t necessarily adults but high school isn’t a setting for either one - Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song (apocalyptic) - Violet Evergarden (slice of life but like vintage)
