fair lol. I was gonna say that as a loan word in English it has a pretty clear determined meaning, but even then I guess there’s some outliers (i.e. the animation for The Last Unicorn was primarily Japanese artists, but for sorta arbitrary reasons we still don’t generally consider it an anime)

in Japanese, “anime” refers to animation in general. it’s only as a loan word in other languages that we use it to mean strictly Japanese animation
