I loved HxH so much because it’s got goofy characters, but has actual death and dark stuff in it. The villains are very fun as well. Leorio is my favorite character 💅

I’m an Evangelion / Revolutionary Girl Utena / Serial Experiments Lain type, so I’m here for the artsy surrealism, psychological drama, thoughtful political themes (I figure that’s a given with Gundam), queerness and having a very depressing time. where do I start

i love black clover so much, i love how it feels like harry potter, peter pan and naruto had a baby. asta is always put down, he is born with nothing. He’s nothing special but that’s what makes him special. my whole life i felt this way towards myself, but knowing i can’t give up. watching him become so strong and able to defeat so many things made me so happy. the other characters have many little set backs and we see them push past their limits. I 100% recommend.

Ok but why?

The fusion of the edo period with hip hop styling, and the character dynamic between the main trio.

I would say Build Fighters (first season) has some minor hip-hop aspects in the openings. Otherwise try 08th MS team

I am hesitant to say this but you might like AGE because it follows the story of a family through the generations

Goofy characters, dark stuff and battle shounen? Check out G Gundam. Right up your alley

All these items you brought up would not exist or have meaningful representation in animanga without Gundam. Evangelion in particular is very derivative of Gundam. I recommend you read (NOT WATCH, READ) Gundam: the Origin. It is an expanded retelling of the original series/movies. I think the latter might be a bit difficult for modern audiences to appreciate.

damn okay, I’m def interested in tracing the history of how those themes are handled in mainstream anime & manga so I’ll look into it. and yeah, I’ll admit that my attention span doesn’t always play so well with the pacing of particularly old school anime, so the manga sounds like a good idea. thanks 👍

Unrelated to Gundam you might want to check out the work of the Year 24 Group, a collective of women-only mangaka that delved into themes like queerness.

oh interesting, I’m familiar with several of the artists involved but certainly not all of them, nor had I heard them grouped under this label before. some good leads to look into! shoutout for being interested in & knowledgeable about this stuff

Knowledge I acquired almost entirely out of spite for Eva fans I fear, but useful nonetheless.

you wound me 😭 nah but in all honesty the fanbase is a hot mess in several directions, that’s fair. I’m curious what your particular beef has been with Eva fans, but no worries if it’s not worth getting into on the spot

Mostly how they insist that EVA deconstructed mecha but have rarely watched any other mecha show besides EVA Gurren Lagann and maybe Code Geass. Like bro how do you know what a deconstruction even is? You don’t know the first thing about the genre.

real! I mean, that’s kinda always been one of those subjects where I recognize that I’m not well-versed enough to form an opinion… I’ve only seen a couple other mecha series, like you said. and it irritates the shit out of me when people smugly feign expertise while refusing to accept criticism

especially I imagine this would be aggravating to a fan of pre-Eva mecha anime due to the implication that earlier series must be shallow, childish, formulaic, lowbrow etc by contrast

See the thing is, maybe some pre-EVA mech is like that but even when true this criticism is surface level. Like, it was formulaic because DVDs and streaming weren’t a thing. But even then mecha could rely on toy sales instead of show views and that fostered a lot of creativity. Dougram is basically a story about colonial violence.

Gundam doesn’t have a lot in terms of magic but I think the best fit for you would be Witch from Mercury.
