As someone who works in animation, the sheer amount of misinformation regarding how anime is produced blows my mind. Also the misinfo regarding Invincible’s animation. Not an anime, but still

So many people think more budget = better animation. Not true. Budget matters, yes, but what really matters is time. If you pay me 1 million dollars to animate an episode but only give me till tomorrow to do it, it’ll still look like ass. Also, people don’t realize that a lot of the same people are working across different studios on different shows/movies. Studio wars are silly, literally only fans care about that stuff

Lol no worries. I don’t wanna out which specific productions I’ve worked on, but I’ve worked on several anime and cartoons. Working on anime is way easier than people realize, you just have to post your work and get noticed by Japanese production assistants working on the shows. Which is surprisingly a lot easier than it sounds. Getting work on Hollywood shows is a lot harder, but it pays way better. Anime pay is complete shit and the deadlines are terrible but its more creatively fulfilling imo

That makes sense lol. I lowkey wanted to be an animator in middle school. I don’t think that dream is going to happen lol. 🫡too deep into my mba. So I’ll just appreciate animators.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t go to school for animation at all, I have a completely unrelated stem degree lol. To get work in animation, you just have to be good. Easier said than done, but if your work speaks for itself, a studio will hire you before someone who has an okay portfolio and an art degree. My advice to most artists who wanna work in the industry is to get a “normal” degree and just work on your portfolio at the same time. YouTube has all the lessons you’ll need

Thank u ur so sweet. Do u have any advice for me on making my own graphic novel? I want to have it in the style of manwha.

Oh god I also tried the graphic novel route too, it was too much work balancing my studio job and writing/drawing my own story. But, I’d say seek out a literary agent. Write a pitch, draw your characters, make some sample pages and hit up any agents who are open to queries. If you’re lucky, one may take you on and get you a book deal with a publisher, which will pay you reasonably well. Or you could also just do it independently, but just be prepared to do it all for free in that case.

No prob, I’m simplifying a lot of what I’m saying here for the sake of the text limit, so keep in mind there’s more nuance in everything I’ve said. But I’m always happy to talk about the stuff I’ve learned working in animation and attempting a graphic novel lol.

Ofc there is more nuance lol. I’m just glad I got somewhere to start and encouragement to do it.

It’s probably because the budget goes towards voice actors. There’s a lot of guest appearances and big names that voice Invincible. I’m reminded that Aqua Teen Hunger force was initially animated with adobe after effects and photoshop with stiff movements (it worked tbh) but still had a lot of its money go to guest voices
