Part of it is probably that, yeah. An unfortunate subsection of the community consists of dudes with certain sexist complexes centered around what constitutes good taste in anime (ideas sometimes rooted in the idea that women are in some way inferior to men). To an annoying amount of people watching more niche and unknown shows makes you more intelligent/cultured/tasteful etc.
