I asked my ex-step dad to adopt me because I grew up with him and I love him and can't stand the idea of not being family anymore. Both my mom and dad are acting like it's an insult to them but I just feel like I have a more familial bond with him

I tried to explain to everyone my reasons for making this choice and gave them examples of why it's important like taking care of him when he's old because he doesn't have any other children and inheritance and because I live on his property, etc. They don't care

I mean if you’re over 18 it’s too late for legal adoption but you can informally be made beneficiary on his stuff and he can have you made his medical power of attorney, and you can just do those other things out of the love you have

In my state, you can be adopted like a minor until age 21

You go to juvenile court and petition for it

Then go for it if you really want to. It is mostly symbolic bc there’s avenues to do everything you’d like to do without it, but if it’s important to you then 100% go for it
