AITA I want to turn off the lights so I can sleep but my friend wants to keep it on bc they’re scared of the dark … we’re 20. I’m literally sleeping in the living room. Not even their room.

You can be in control of everything if you get a hotel room… they’re graciously hosting you in their home as a favor and you wanna complain about how they live in their own home

Why are you sleeping in the living room? Why don’t yall switch places that way you can sleep in the dark and she can sleep with the lights? I don’t think either of you are TAH, I just think yall aren’t trying to find a workable solution.

A blink lasts less than .5 seconds your comparison is idiotic, people are afraid of the dark it’s a normal thing. Also sleeping is something we’re required to do so obviously nobody is afraid of sleeping because majority of the time you don’t even realize it

people being afraid of the dark after age 12 isnt normal this is so strange and confusing i just cannot comprehend how you can be afraid of something like the dark where absolutely nothing changes about your surroundings

Anonymous replying to -> #5 2d

It’s the fear of not being able to see, it’s a completely normal fear that stems from anxiety, trashing someone for fearing anything is so close minded let alone something like the dark

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #5 2d

It’s a fear that is literally hardwired into you, it’s all about lack of visual stimuli when you’re an adult. To go to someone else’s home and then have the audacity to talk about them sleeping with a light is just beyond ungrateful

do your eyes not adjust in the dark? because i can see pretty okay with the lights off. this isnt you having anxiety its you being a baby about the dark

if i was in someones home and they were sleeping with a bright ass light on i would talk about it especially since op said they werent even sharing rooms they were made to keep the light on in a different room that the home owner wasnt even sleeping in

Anonymous replying to -> #1 2d

and its not “hardwired into you” you can get over a fear especially one like the dark when its so easy to be surrounded by darkness. i was scared of the dark in elementary and so were most people and then you get to middle school and realize its ridiculous to be afraid of something like that you missed that update i guess

You don’t have to be there go to a hotel they offered their home to you and if you don’t like their rules then leave

It’s a primal fear from lack of visual stimuli, some can get over it some can’t and it’s completely normal. A lot of people keep lights on so they can see if they get up in the night and a lot of people keep them on for peace of mind. It’s only an irrational fear if extreme paranoia is involved other than that it’s a fear that has existed in adults since the dawn of time

Complete dark means you can’t see anything, if you are able to see something it’s because there’s a small amount of light coming from somewhere. Calling people babies for having a genuine fear of not being able to see especially when they’re most vulnerable is ridiculous

1/3 of Americans are afraid of the dark and an ever higher amount world wide, when you take away your literal main sense, it creates a feeling of unease

again it’s completely normal if you are under the age of 12. you and the person op was staying with are the only people ive heard of who still have a fear of the dark at 19/20 its ridiculous

I did not choose to have them they came with the room long before I was born, I keep them because I have light sensitivity issues with my eyes and super bright lights along with it always being hot (the sun is always harsh where I live)

Science says it’s a fear that originates long before you darkened the earth with your presence, it’s normal it’s natural it’s all about the unknown. Your vision is your primary sense taking it away makes you vulnerable ie where the fear comes from
