AITA for telling my friend kpop demon hunters is a kids movie? I mean like it’s totally fine for them to like it, but the genre is for a children’s film tho. Same as saying Toy Story is a kids movie bc it is

No, but I think as long as you make it clear that you’re not judging them then you should be fine.

What was the context in the conversation and how did you say it?

Actually, it’s a movie that is made for all ages but more for teenagers or older adults in mind, but because of its mass popularity, of course, as an animated film, it can be seen as a "child’s movie," but it's really not.

How dare you say a masterpiece that took over 7 years to make is simply a child’s film. This is an award winning work of art.

Children’s movies aren’t worse by nature of being children’s movies. Look at studio ghibli, their movies are primarily children’s movies and yet most of them are damn near masterpieces that can be enjoyed by all. Look at a lot of Pixar movies like the incredibles, ratatouille, Toy Story, those are all made for children and yet are fantastic regardless and can, again, be enjoyed by all ages

Ghibli movies aren’t just for children their for adults I know this because I’ve been to the exclusive thinking museum multiple times!

They were trying to get me to watch it but I tried telling them I didn’t want to bc I’m not into that genre, like kids movies and stuff. Like it’s fine for them to like it but I’m not into that type of movie, like musical animated whatever more children’s genre type of thing. They got upset when I said kids movie and they said it couldn’t be a kids movie bc the material was “really dark” and bc someone had their shirt off or smth. To me that doesn’t seem crazy for a kids genre of movie

To be clear I’m not hating on the movie, I just don’t prefer to be a fan personally. From the clips I’ve seen of it I think it’s pretty annoying and reminds me of the trolls movie. If you like the movie that’s totally fine, but I don’t think I should have to enjoy it ? If that makes sense

But isn’t the audience primarily children? Wouldn’t that make it a children’s movie? They don’t have to be exclusively just for children to be a children’s movie

You can work on something for a long time and it still be for children, just bc it’s for kids doesn’t change it being art or the value of it. Children’s literature is probably one of the most important/influential aspects of history, it doesn’t mean any less that it’s for children. But it is in fact for children at the end of the day

That's not really how it works, but if you think that way, I’m not going to argue. I’m also going to say that even if something is childish, that doesn't mean it's only for children. Lots of grown adults like drawing or stuffed animals; they even make a living out of it.

Yeah I tried to make that pretty clear with them that I wasn’t like saying it was a bad movie or they’re less for liking it, it’s just a movie that is FOR kids like factually

That’s fair, you don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to. Their offense was probably taken because typically when people say they don’t like children’s media, they’re devaluing purely on the basis that it was made for children as opposed to genuinely giving it a fair shot as art. They say “oh that’s *just* a kids movie”, “this show can’t have any meaningful or thoughtful messages because it’s *just* a kids show”, etc. I will say though, I haven’t seen the trolls movies, but from what I do-

-know about them, K-pop demon hunters isn’t really similar aside from some of what you’ve already outlined (musical and animated, it is technically a children’s movie but it’s aimed more at teens than at <12 kids). It is a bit obnoxious at times, but overall I think it’s worth a shot, at least try and appreciate the beautiful animation
