WIBTA if I charged my roommate a “living fee” or make him pay me back for a few things even tho I don’t have definitive proof he took them? That was MY couch, MY knife, and MY spoons.

document everything that is happening with photos (if applicable, like the couch), time stamps, and written word. make a google doc and put everything on there, it makes this process easier. (2)

give him the option to either find a replacement couch (AND figure out how to get rid of the current one), or compensate you for the cost of getting the current one professionally cleaned. (3)

while i understand your frustration, a “living fee” is not the way to fix things. next time you see him, ask him to go get your belongings immediately. if he refuses to fetch them, inform him that you WILL be entering his space to search for what you let him borrow. (1)

and come up with a system on keeping your shared spaces clean, that works with all of your roommates. ground rules and a couple chores are not too much to ask. and if he still feels like being a pig, i say kick his ass out.

A “living fee?” You cannot be serious. And you have roommate “meetings?” Yea, you’re doing too much. Yall probably get on his nerves with your absurdly territorial behavior (YOUR knife?). Him not doing chores is one thing and he should definitely be contributing, but that apartment sounds like torture. I can assure you, he will not be renewing his lease. 😂 Poor guy.

I agree on some of this but did you miss the part where he used someone else’s toothbrush lmao

I mean, that is bad but could it be an extra? I keep a whole pack of toothbrushes under my sink. Realistically I think he’s fucking with them bc they’re assholes.

He’s subleasing so when he moved in we wanted to have a meeting to discuss how we do chores and sharing things. I’m fine with him using communal spaces, but IM NOT OKAY with him deliberately destroying things and losing things that aren’t inherently his. And no, the toothbrush wasn’t an extra. It was sitting on the bathroom counter. My other roommate found it used, wet, and CHEWED ON. if he can’t respect other people’s things, he shouldn’t be allowed to use them. Couches don’t grow on trees

The apartment isn’t torture. Literally all I ask (especially from a man pushing 30) is to clean up after yourself, take out the trash every once in a while AND DONT DESTROY OTHER PEOPLES THINGS.

Oh it’s definitely not a warm and inviting place. I bet you leave post it notes on every item. 😂 Dude’s just needing a place to sleep and you’re making it like he’s in a bad foster home or something. I’m sure you’re fun at parties.

How would u feel if a stranger moved in, made messes everywhere, didn’t clean up, and lost your belongings

It’s clear you aren’t willing to take some ownership in any of this, so I’m not going back and forth with you. All you’ve done is bitch at him and made him feel unwelcome. I wouldn’t do shit you asked or abide by any of your nonsensical rules.

Ownership of what exactly? His irresponsibility? I’m not a dick outwardly to him. I’m the only one in that apt that actually talks to him. I’ve told him, don’t get my couch messy, please pick up garbage off the floor, and do you think you can take the trash out. I have shown him nothing but kindness despite all of this.

Did the roommate tell you that all OP has done is bitch at him and make him feel unwelcome? That’s wild
