AITA, I hate talking to older people every time I do I feel like they little brother me and act like I’m dumb. It doesn’t matter why the convo is about bc since I only 20 and they’re older, theyre auto smarter than me. Does this happen to y’all or AITA?

As someone who always felt that way, I was talking to a 19 year old and I was thinking wow they have a lot of opinions and they still have a lot to learn. So I think they do have a tendency to speak down and it’s terrible and rude, but I can see why.

Younger people have less experience overall and therefore their availability heuristic is limited & they tend to rely on that often. Doesn’t make being disrespectful right of course. But it does explain why older people tend look at you as less. Not less of a person, just less experienced.

It’s only a bad thing if: 1) they’re being rude/disrespectful of course 2) you choose to be insulted instead of listening. In scenario 2, you are actively showing that “I know it all” or “you can’t teach me anything” which is often times wrong. It is the Dunning–Kruger effect
