it sounds like your boyfriend was just protecting you due to the fact that you said the older man was the initial aggressor. i dont think this is a valid reason to break up with him

As annoying as that may be, hitting an old 70 year old man is fucking crazy. NTA especially if it makes you uncomfortable.

The bf should not have gotten out of the car. Also how much damage is a frail little 70 year old man going to a (presumably) healthy 20-30 year old guy? It can be infuriating but when that happens you leave it and back down especially if the other person is a child or elderly.

Being 70 does not mean you are frail, and it definitely does not mean you get a free pass to drive recklessly, destroy property, and threaten the well being of whoever you want. You come in to this assuming the old guy is a sweet little saint when we know from the OP he did all three of those things before the bf responded, and then bf only acted to stop the threat and disengaged, he acted well within his legal an moral right to self defence

Yeah if this turned into a shooting, the prosecutor would ream you for getting out of the safety of your car to fight. It is no longer self defense at that point, because you could have drove off. Now if he follows, that might be a different story….
