it sounds like your boyfriend was just protecting you due to the fact that you said the older man was the initial aggressor. i dont think this is a valid reason to break up with him

As annoying as that may be, hitting an old 70 year old man is fucking crazy. NTA especially if it makes you uncomfortable.

Probably like 70’s, the old dude whipped in front of us and clipped the front end and kept going, my bf followed and blared the horn till he stopped and the guy got out and came up and started pounding on the window and yelling so my bf shoved the door open and it knocked him down and then the old guy got back up and shoved my bf so he punched the old guy and knocked him down again then got back in the car till the cops came

Honestly that just sounds like a road rage fight. He didn’t stomp the guy, just got him to stop being aggressive. And 70 year olds aint no joke, my grandpa almost put a guy through a wall.

Its gotta be disturbing to see that violence ofc, but that old guy was the aggressor, and I don’t think your boyfriend went too far. He didn’t beat the shit out of him, just stopped him from doing more harm to the car, himself, or you. And the old guy also hit first.

To clarify the bf should have just stood there and let the other guy beat the shit out of him?

The bf should not have gotten out of the car. Also how much damage is a frail little 70 year old man going to a (presumably) healthy 20-30 year old guy? It can be infuriating but when that happens you leave it and back down especially if the other person is a child or elderly.

To be fair he might not be frail. When my grandpa was dying from cancer he almost put a gun shop owner through a wall by mistake.

Being 70 does not mean you are frail, and it definitely does not mean you get a free pass to drive recklessly, destroy property, and threaten the well being of whoever you want. You come in to this assuming the old guy is a sweet little saint when we know from the OP he did all three of those things before the bf responded, and then bf only acted to stop the threat and disengaged, he acted well within his legal an moral right to self defence
