friend said it was disrespectful that i didn’t offer gas money every time we went somewhere together. i asked them to remind me in the future and id gladly give it to them. they told me it was even more disrespectful that i asked them to remind me. aita?

No that’s weird. If your friend expects money, they need to let you know. You cannot read their mind. In other countries sure people are more vague with what they want, but generally in the US that’s the standard and kinda should know they need to ask for their needs. Basic childhood skills.

why would they need gas money from you if they’re also going to the same place

more context: i was not aware they wanted gas money. they said it’s common sense to offer gas money (none of my other friends has ever gone by this nor was i raised to ask for gas money from friends) even if i’m just tagging along somewhere. i tend to be forgetful so i just asked them to remind me to give them money if i forgot to offer from now on. they were appalled that id need a reminder and can’t believe no one else has had this rule about gas money. im legitimately so confused

No one's really the asshole, you were just raised differently and have different expectations. It's less common now to ask for gas money in my experience but it also depends on how far and how often or if there is any type of exchange in different ways then just money.

the only time i found it important to offer is if i was asking to go as a favor. most times i just tagged along where they wanted to go since i don’t have a car rn. our friendship ended over this bc they ghosted me after i tried to apologize :(

yeah that's different, it's crazy that they ended your friendship over that. keep your head up, someone that's willing to drop you over something like gas money doesn't deserve to be in your life anyways

yeah it was crazy 😭 we’d been friends for years and for some reason this was what ended it. i realized we weren’t compatible at all

they also said i should give gas money if i’m just going somewhere with them where only they want to go, since im getting a ride out of it. in their words it’s a “free” ride but it’s not really free if i’m paying to be allowed in your car 😭
