This is known as a person vs environment fit. In western culture (in the US), it’s considered “rude and unwelcoming”. In places like Italy and Europe, the kind of behavior you’re describing a preference to is more common and thus accepted.

I’m the same way. I mean, sure when ppl say “Hi” I’ll smile. I’m polite but everyone’s weird asf nowadays. They could be creeps/weirdos. I’m 20 but still kind of do the whole stranger danger thing. You can never be too sure. Plus, you’re not obligated to treat everyone like a friend/be super nice. As long as you respect others, then you’re okay

I mean I do this too. If someone wants to stop and talk I’ll happily oblige, I always try to be kind and positive. But I keep to myself and am private about my personal life. My new rm thought I wasn’t being friendly but I told her that’s just how I am. After a long day of work and school I just want to come home eat and sleep. She took it personally, so I understand sometimes it hurts people, but you gotta protect your peace. I was a ppl pleaser for too long I’m exhausted.
