AITA for not wanting to drink even though my mom wants me to? The main reason I don’t is cause it conflicts with my medications (Cymbalta and Gabapentin) but when I decline to have a drink with her she gets really upset cause she wants to have fun with me

No absolutely not. I’m the same. My mom thinks it’s something I should try, same with others in my family, but I’m firm against it. One thing you can do is tell her that your doctor won’t let you / doesn’t recommend it. My mom actually recommended I ask before I went to college (didn’t give the answer she was expecting) and said I could have basically 1-2 sips. I just decided to never drink then.

Nta. No is a full sentence. If you don’t want to drink you don’t have to. No one should make you feel bad for not wanting to put a drug in your body. (Yes even tho it is the most socially acceptable drug it is still a drug)

To be clear, she’s not like an alcoholic or anything, we’re on vacation rn and she mixed up some Mai tais and wanted me to have one, and when I declined she still insisted I at least “taste” it (I didn’t)

No that’s not the point, the point is she’s actively endangering your health (and potentially ur life if the complications are bad enough) just bc she wants to “have a little fun”

I get that, I’m sorry my comment was harsh. But you’re on both an antidepressant and a depressant, I feel like a normal mom wouldn’t encourage you to drink alcohol with those. It wouldn’t be that bad if she just offered you a drink sometimes but to actually get upset with you over declining is just wild

Yeah, I’m also a lightweight on top of everything else so it’s not like I even enjoy drinking to being with (plus the rum she was using was really strong and not something I would have, meds or not)

When I asked my doctor how much you could drink on Cymbalta, she basically said “you can’t.”

Sometimes it’s about the combination of medicines and how they interact which can be amplified by alcohol. Plus why they are taking it does matter. For some medications it makes symptoms worse, others it can make the medicine less or ineffective. Not to mention dosage is everything.

Yeah, I take gabapentin for chronic pain and Cymbalta for depression and also chronic pain
